AGTV Years 4 to 9 Poetry Competition

Details as at 6 May 2021


This competition is only for students from AGTV member schools.

Schools must first register their intention of participating.

If your school missed the deadline and wants to participate, please email agtv@agtv.vic.edu.au, as registrations have closed.


Structure of the Competition


There are 3 stages of the competition: School, Regional and State Competitions

  • School Competition (to decide who will compete in the Regional Final)
  • AGTV Regional Final* (selected medal winners are eligible for the final stage)

*Regional Finals may be face to face or held remotely. It is a local decision.

Individual and groups compete at the Regional Final. Only individuals proceed further.

Students compete for individual Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Regional Finals.

Year 4 students only compete at Regional Finals.

  • AGTV State Final - the final stage with students from across Victoria.

Students compete for trophies and shields at the State Final. 

The State Final will be held on Sat 28th August 2021.


The AGTV State Final is supported by the Goethe-Institut.


What do students have to do in the Individual section?

  • Students choose a poem chosen from a list provided by the Committee to learn to recite by heart
  • Schools select students to enter the Regional Final (numbers tbc)
  • Students recite their poem at the Regional Final and are judged using the AGTV critera to compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals
  • Eligible medalists are invited to compete in the State Final


Eligibility for the Individual DaF and Open competition


DaF section: There is restricted entry for the DaF Section.  Only students learning German as a new language from classroom exposure at school. Any student whose first or second home language is German or who are current or past students of a bilingual school must enter the OPEN section.


Open section: Any student may enter the OPEN section.


NB: It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to determine the eligibility of students for DaF. Teachers should contact the AGTV if there are any doubts about the eligibility of students.


What do students have to for the Group section?

  • The group performs a nominated poem as a group in any style.

Eligibility for the Group section

  • The only restriction in this section is that there must be at least 3 members of the group. There can be across year levels, DaF and Open - it is up to the school.

Registration of the Participation of Schools

  • All schools intending to participate in the competition must register their intention to enable planning of Regional Finals.
  • Nominate one teacher from the school or campus who will be the contact person to complete a registration on this website.

The details of the contact person will be used to communicate with the school regarding this competition by the Committee and Network Leaders or Regional Final Coordinators.

Where do I find the poems?


Poems have been forwarded to the contact teacher from schools registering their participation on this site after the closing date for registrations.


NB: The classroom teacher is responsible for determining if students are eligible for the DaF section. Teachers should contact the AGTV if they have any doubts about the eligibility of students. 


Regional and State Finals


Schools select students to enter the relevant Regional Final for Mainstream, Bilingual or Community Schools. Students at VSL Centres may also participate in a Regional Final and the Distance Ed Centres can run their own Regional Final.


The Committee allocates schools and VSL Centres to a Regional Final.


Who can enter a Regional Final?


Only students learning German at an AGTV member school can enter.


A student may compete in one Individual (Open or DaF) competition and/or in a Group competition at one Regional Final. 


Students compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Individual DaF and Open competitions at the Regional Final.


Results from Regional Finals must be received by tbc.


Only eligible prize winners in the Individual competitions at Regional Finals progress to the State Final. NB: Year 4 students do not compete in the State Final.

AGTV Criteria for Judging

  • These have been emailed to the contact teachers and are posted on the Poetry Competition webpage.

NB: No props. The judges decision if final. No score sheets given out.



NB: Years 10 to 12 students may compete at the competition run in alternate years by Monash University and the University of Melbourne.  In 2021, the competition will be hosted by the University of Melbourne and held remotely on Monday 19th July. More details and poems to come.

Members are required to agree to the Rules of the Association.
