Students from AGTV member schools are invited to enter the AGTV Poetry Competition for Years 4 to 9 in 2019

Registration of the Participation of Schools
All schools wanting to participate in this competition are required to register their intended participation. Nominate one teacher from the school or campus who will be the contact person to complete a registration on this website.
The details of the contact person will be used to communicate with the school regarding this competition by the Committee and Network Leaders or Regional Final Coordinators.

The Regional Final Coordinator will contact you with the date and details incl. a small charge to cover costs of the regional final.
What do students have to do?
Students choose a poem to learn recite it by heart from a set list for the Open and DaF Individual sections.
There will be only one poem for the Open Group Performance section, which will only be held at the Regional Final.
Students may enter the individual section and be part of a group performance.
Where do I find the poems?
Poems will be forwarded to the contact teacher from schools registering their participation on this site. The teacher determines if students are eligible for the DaF sections.
Regional and State Finals
Schools select students to enter the relevant Regional Final for Mainstream, Bilingual or Community Schools. Students at VSL Centres may also participate in a Regional Final.
The Committee allocates schools and VSL Centres to a Regional Final.
Who can enter a Regional Final?
Students learning German at an AGTV member school can enter.
The local Regional Final Coordinator determines how many students from each school can enter each section of the competition.
Students may compete in one Individual (Open or DaF) competition and/or one Group Performance (Open) at a Regional Final.
Students compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the individual DaF and Open competitions at the Regional Final.
There will be awards for the Open Group Performances.
Results from regional Final must be received by Sat 10th August.
Only eligible prize winners in the Individual competitions at Regional Finals progress to the State Final. NB: Year 4 students do not compete in the State Final.
The State Final is on Saturday 17th August, 2019.

About the Open and DaF Sections 2019
There are two sections for the competition: OPEN and DaF (Deutsch als Fremdsprache - Second Language Learners).
Eligibility for the OPEN Section 2019
Any student learning German at an AGTV member school may enter the Open Section.
There are two competitions in the Open section: Individual (Year 4, Years 5/6, Years 7/8 and Year 9) and Group Performance* (2 to 10 in a group from students learning German in Years 4 to 9 at the school).
*Group performances are at Regional Finals only. There is ONE poem only for the Group Performance.
Eligibility for the DaF Section 2019
Students learning German as a new language from classroom exposure at an AGTV member school.
There is one competition in the DaF section: Individual (Years 4 to 9)
NB: It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to determine the eligibility of students for DaF, which is a restricted competition. Teachers should contact the AGTV if they have any doubts about the eligibility of students.
AGTV Criteria for Judging
NB: No props. The judges decision if final.
Pronunciation and Intonation
The words are pronounced correctly with confidence.
Diction and Phrasing
The phrases are distinct and appropriately emphasized e.g. tempo, stress, pauses.
Interpretation and Insight
How effectively an understanding of the mood and meaning of the poem is conveyed. This includes the overall tone and use of voice, eye contact, facial expressions and, in rare instances, limited gestures as appropriate for a recitation to a German-speaking community.
And if students are competing in a Group Performance, there is an additional criterion:
Group Performance
How effectively the students work as a team to deliver a polished group performance.
NB: Year 10 to 12 students may compete at the competition run by the universities. In 2019, this will be hosted by the University of Melbourne.
