33rd AGTV Years 4 to 9 Poetry Competition

These competitions are only for students learning German from current AGTV member schools.
- Individual DaF and Individual Open Competitions
- Open Group Performance (see further info below)
Registration of the school's intention to participate in the Individual Competitions
Schools register their intention of participating by Friday 2 April (end of Term 1).
- Nominate one teacher from the school or campus who will be the contact person to complete a registration on this website.
The details of the contact person will be used to communicate with the school regarding this competition by the Committee and Network Leaders or Regional Final Coordinators.
Structure of the Individual DaF and Open Sections
Students select a poem from a list to learn to recite by heart.
NB: Poems will be forwarded to contact teachers at the start of Term 2.
Eligibility for the Individual Open and Individual DaF Competitions
Open section: Any student may enter the OPEN section.
DaF section: There is restricted entry for the DaF Section. Only students learning German as a new language from classroom exposure at school. Any student whose first or second home language is German or who are current or past students from a bilingual school must enter the OPEN section.
NB: It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to determine the eligibility of students for DaF. Teachers should contact the Committee if there are any doubts about the eligibility of students. Schools must submit a Declaration of Eligibility for DaF form. Please respect the rules of this competition.
Three Stages of the Individual Competitions
1. School Competition
The school determines who will compete in the Regional Final in the individual sections.
2. AGTV Regional Final
Regional Finals must be in person or LIVE online. The Committee may be able to help with a LIVE online Regional Final. The Regional Final Coordinator determines how many students can enter for each year level at the Regional Final.
Students compete for individual Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Regional Finals. The medals are forwarded to Regional Final Coordinators by the Committee.
NB: Year 4 students only compete at Regional Finals.
3. Regional Final Results Due Dates
Results and report on Regional Finals must be forwarded to the Committee by Saturday 8th August.
Primary results may be later by negotiation with the Committee but no later than Saturday 5 September.
4. AGTV State Finals - the final stage with students from across Victoria.
Eligible medalists at Regional Finals in Years 5 to 9 are invited to compete in the relevant State Final by the Committee. Their parent/carer registers their attendance.
- Secondary State Final to be held on Sat 22nd August 2026
- Primary State Final to be held on UPDATE!! Sat 12th Setember 2026
Where do I find the poems?
Poems were emailed to the contact teacher from schools registering their participation on this site at the start of Term 2.
AGTV Criteria for Individual Judging
NB: No props or costumes. The judges decision if final. No score sheets given out.

FYI: Years 10 to 12 students may have the opportunity to compete at the German Poetry Competition run in alternate years by Monash University and the University of Melbourne. This year, Monash University is organising the competition.
About the Poetry Group Performance Competition
RegistIstration opens for the Open Group Performance Competition in Term 2.
Eligibility for the Group section
- Students in Years 4 to 9 learning German at a current AGTV member school may be part of a group performance.
- Minimum of 3 students in a group
- There are no restrictions on who can be part of a group other than students must be learning German at an AGTV member school.
What do students have to for the Group section?
- Rehearse and film a group performance of your selected poem from the list
- Performance can be in any style.
- Max 2 entries per school or campus
Register separately and forward entries by Saturday 12 September.
Students may enter the Individual and Group Competitions.
